THE LEADING NETWORK OF LABORATORIES FOR THE CONTROL AND MONITORING OF WATER QUALITY IN THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

We provide answers to all the analytical needs of the sector.

Eurofins Environment Testing Spain’s network of laboratories participates in programs for monitoring the status of surface and groundwater bodies in accordance with the applicable regulations. The monitoring programs are the fundamental and basic tool for water management and planning because they provide the necessary information for the surveillance of compliance with environmental objectives and evaluation of the effectiveness of the programs of measures.

We are aware of the importance of carrying out monitoring that meets the required level of confidence in different calculations, following official protocols and relying on specialists for water, sediment and biota sampling, identification and analysis of chemical and physicochemical, biological and hydromorphological quality elements.

Our experience includes:

  • Design and review of monitoring programs.
  • Identification of risk contaminants.
  • Sampling and in situ measurements.
  • Analysis and identification of quality elements. Calculation of biological and hydromorphological indices.
  • Evaluation of the status of water bodies and additional requirements of protected areas.
  • Data validation and processing. Preparation of reports.
  • Information exchange compatible with the National Water Quality Information System (NABIA).

Types of controls and monitoring of water quality in the natural environment

Physical-chemical and chemical controls:

The evaluation of these quality elements is made on the basis of the values of pollutant concentrations, groups of pollutants and pollution indicators obtained in the monitoring. These controls include, among others, the determination of heavy metals, pesticides and pharmaceuticals, which is essential to identify sources of contamination as well as to evaluate the environmental and human health risk. These controls are essential to comply with environmental regulations and ensure water safety.

To this end, Eurofins Environment Testing Spain’s network of laboratories employs advanced sensors for continuous monitoring of water quality. Our equipment is prepared with the latest technologies to perform measurements, both at the surface and at great depths, reporting changes in the physicochemical conditions of water bodies. This information is used to carry out specific studies that provide the information required for pollution control and evaluation of the status of water bodies.

Biological controls:

Biological quality elements are nothing more than certain organisms (plants or animals) whose presence or absence at a given point reveals very accurate information about the quality of the water and the ecosystem of which they form part. These organisms will have certain preferences and tolerances with respect to the environmental conditions of the environment in such a way that, when there is an alteration in it, a change in the composition and dominance of species is originated. In the Eurofins Environment Testing Spain laboratory network, we have specialists capable of measuring and assessing this change:

  • Aquatic flora (phytoplankton, phytobenthos and macrophytes)
  • Benthic invertebrate fauna
  • Ichthyological fauna

All of this provides a comprehensive and time-extended view of water quality.

Hydromorphological controls:

Hydromorphology is the basis of any river system. This is because it is an element that structures the communities and biological processes occurring in the system.

The hydromorphological indicators evaluate, on the one hand, the difference between the current hydrological and geomorphological characteristics of the river courses. On the other hand, they evaluate the characteristics that the water bodies would have in the absence of human alterations. This is done to ensure the proper functioning of the fluvial ecosystem. Hydromorphological characterization includes the analysis of the indicators hydrological regime associated with the ecosystems, fluvial continuity and physical structure or morphological conditions.

In Eurofins Environment Testing Spain’s network of laboratories we carry out the hydromorphological field and cabinet works required in the evaluation of the status of water bodies following official protocols.

Our techniques

Sampling of water, sediments and biota:

We use standardized sampling methods to ensure the representativeness and precision of the samples, which allows us to obtain reliable and applicable data.

Laboratory analysis:

We perform a wide range of analyses in their laboratories, including physicochemical, microbiological and biological tests. They use state-of-the-art equipment and advanced techniques. We guarantee accurate and high quality results.

Environmental DNA technology:

Environmental DNA (eDNA) technology can detect the presence of organisms and contaminants through their genetic material in water. This innovative technique is highly sensitive and accurate and facilitates early identification of invasive species and biodiversity monitoring.

Sensors and real-time monitoring:

We employ advanced sensors and real-time monitoring technologies for continuous water quality surveillance. These systems detect immediate changes in water quality and provide real-time data for rapid and efficient management.
