Microplastic Analysis

Microplastic analysis service

Laboratory approved by the competent authority for microplastic analysis.

We offer analysis service for the chemical characterization of the following types of microplastics. In all our reports we detail en masse about the sample quantity.

Polyethylene (PE)

Polystyrene (PS)

Polypropylene (PP)

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)

Polycarbonate (PC)

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

Polyamide (PA)

por qué es necesario análisis de microplásticos

Why is microplastics
analysis neccesary?

Microplastics are a group of synthetic materials that are made from petroleum-derived or bio-based polymers.

They are tiny solid particles, less than 5 millimeters in size, which are not soluble in water and whose degradability is low.

They originate from the fragmentation of larger plastic objects or are manufactured on a microscopic scale into products such as cosmetics and textiles. Its analysis is necessary for the following reasons:

  • Impact on marine life
  • Human health risks
  • Long-term ecological effects
  • Pollution assessment
  • Interaction with chemical contaminants
  • Development of management policies

Our analysis mehods and equipment

At Eurofins Environment Testing Spain we use advanced analytical techniques to accurately characterize microplastics. We work with two main techniques:

Gas chromatography

This technique allows us to separate and analyze compounds from the thermal fragmentation of polymers present in the samples, resulting in accurate detection of microplastics in a variety of matrices.

Infrared spectroscopy (ATR)

Our reports provide a count and mass concentration. In addition to the separation of the particles between 250 and 5 mm, we characterize them.

Samples we analyze

Eurofins Environment Testing Spain is equipped to analyze a wide range of samples for microplastics. Some of the samples we process include:

Drinking water

Tap and bottled water.

Consumer products

Coffee cups and personal care products.

Salt, rice, etc.

Surface water

Rivers & Lakes

R+D: µNanocare Project

At Eurofins Environment Testing Spain we are always committed to innovation. This is where µNanocare was born, a project that is part of the Spanish programme ‘Collaboration Challenges’ 2019, in which we work in collaboration with the Castellonense Agricultural Development Society, FACSA and the IMDEA Water Foundation.

The aim of the μNanocare project is to quantify the presence of microplastics in reclaimed water and agricultural systems. An initiative to improve wastewater treatment systems.

What makes our laboratories stand out?

  • We have a network of environmental laboratories distributed throughout the national territory, which makes us a benchmark supplier in terms of environmental analysis. In addition, we have maximum scope at the level of accredited parameters and environmental matrices, which allows us to cover all types of sectors and areas.

  • Dealing directly with our customers is our “hallmark”. We work daily to offer you the highest quality in our service and therefore, one of our main goals is to rigorously comply with delivery deadlines. In addition, we provide our customers with individualized responses to emergencies, unforeseen events or specific requirements so that they always have the most efficient response possible.

  • Each batch of results will be accompanied by positive and negative checks. During extraction and cleaning, particles of different sizes are recovered from reference materials of different plastics.

All analyses are carried out in a positive pressure laboratory, always using good practices to reduce or eliminate background impurities.

  • Our laboratories provide their customers with extensive equipment, equipped with the latest technologies on the market and the experience of their staff for the development of new test methods. Innovation and technology are two hallmarks of Eurofins Environment Testing Spain. All our results are digitized so that the client can consult them in real time online.

  • We have a large number of accreditations both by ENAC and by other bodies that allow us to guarantee our clients the maximum reliability and quality of the results.
