AQUASERS Project

AQUASERS

Development of new biotechnological tools for the control and prevention of emerging pathogens in industrial environments

Description

The main objective of the AQUASERS project is the cooperative research and development of new biotechnological solutions integrated into an automated device for water-quality monitoring. This includes the detection og Legionella pneumophila and key psysicochemical parameters, enabling the prevention and surveillance of legionellosis in industrial and hospital environments, the leisurre and tourism sector, as well as in mains-water supply points.

Objectives

Development of new bioanalytical solutions based on the use of biosensors for rapid and multiplex microorganism detection.

Development of new equipment for sample collection and conditioning

Integration of the detection and sampling systems into a device controlled by its own dedicated software

Progress to Date

Since the project began in September 2023, the most representative water matrices have beencharacterised and evaluated by sutdying parameters related to the preparation, capture and analysis of pathogens present in industrial environments. In parallel, work is underway on the development of biosensors for viable and non-viable Legionella spp., as well as others microorganisms, in order to validate them against traditional control methodologies. Although there is still progress to be made, the initial results from adapted biosensors and automated sample preparation are highly promising, bringing the project closer to its goal: the development of an automated device capable of controlling and preventing legionellosis through continuous monitoring of water quality.
